Continuing Christ's Apostolic Ministry
Holy Orders is the sacrament by which the apostolic ministry is continued in the Church. Through bishops, priests, and deacons, Catholics believe Christ continues to teach, shepherd, and sanctify His people.
Ordination is not primarily a promotion, job qualification, or declaration that someone is holier than other Catholics. It establishes a form of service: ordained ministers are given authority for the sake of building up the Church, not for personal privilege.
